1775-1783: American Revolution
American colonists fought for independence from Britain.
American victory resulted in the formation of the U.S.A. and
the acquisition of British territory extending to the
Mississippi River.
1812-1814: War of 1812
British seizure of U.S. merchant ships and impressments of
U.S. sailors during a war with France led to war with the U.S.
Ended with neither side gaining anything.
1846-1848: Mexican War
Mexico and the U.S. fought over boundaries and control of
Texas. The U.S. defeated Mexico and gained vast new territory
in the southwest. Mexico gave up all claims to Texas.
1861-1865:
American
Civil War
Union forces of the North fought against Confederate troops
from the South over slavery and other issues. Ended in Union
victory and the preservation of the United States of America.
1898: Spanish-American War
Spain and the U.S. fought over the issue of liberation for
Cuba. U.S. victory marked its emergence as a world power and
led to the independence of Cuba, and the acquisition by the
U.S. of Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines from Spain.
1914-1918:
World
War I
Britain, France, Russia, Japan, the United States, and 19
other Allied countries fought against the Central
powers--Austria-Hungary, Germany, the Ottoman Empire, and
Bulgaria. The war cost more than $337 billion. Servicemen
killed totaled more than 5,000,000 on the Allied side and more
than 3,300,000 on the side of the Central Powers. The war had
widespread effects, including the establishment of new
governments in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Finland,
Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia,
Yugoslavia, and several countries of western Asia.
1939-1945:
World
War II
The Allies--Britain, Canada, China, France, Russia, the United
States, and 43 other nations--defeated the Axis--Germany,
Italy, Japan and six other nations. The most costly and
destructive war in history, WW2 killed more than 10 million
Allied servicemen and nearly 6 million Axis servicemen.
Additionally, countless civilians were killed, including an
estimated 6 million Jews who died in Germany concentration
camps. The war was fought in Europe, Africa, Asia and the
Pacific. Provisions in the peace treaties signed after the war
included the surrender of Axis territory; limitations on the
size of the military forces allowed in Axis countries; Allied
occupation of Germany, Italy and Japan; and payment of
reparations to the Allies.
1950-1953:
Korean
War
United Nations forces fought against Communist Chinese and
North Korean troops after North Korea invaded South Korea.
Ended in a truce signed by the UN and North Korea.
1957-1975:
Vietnam
War
Communist Vietnamese forces, called the Viet Cong, and
North Vietnamese troops supported by China and Russia, fought
against South Vietnamese Army troops, U.S. troops, and forces
from South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand. Ended
with Communist victory and control over all of Vietnam.
